Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Energy is heat (thermal) derived from the earth (geo). It is the thermal energy contained in the rock and fluid (that fills the fractures and pores within the rock) in the earth's crust.

Calculations show that the earth, originating from a completely molten state, would have cooled and become completely solid many thousands of years ago without an energy input in addition to that of the sun. It is believed that the ultimate source of geothermal energy is radioactive decay occurring deep within the earth. As new energies are coming more widely available and widespread, Benfield ATT are increasingly recieving requests for informative links below.

General information

  • The International Geothermal Association (IGA)
Very good site packed with information, data and many links to further information.

  • The Geothermal Resources Council
US on-line library and geothermal links.

  • International Ground Source Heat Pump Association
US based information on geothermal heat pumps.

  • GeoExchange
Site of the Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium with information on geothermal, ground source heating and cooling systems

  • Canadian Earth Energy Association
This site provides background information for residential or commercial owners who are considering the benefits of earth energy.

  • The IEA Heat Pump Centre (HPC)
An independent international information centre on heat pumps and related technologies such as air conditioning and refrigeration. The HPC operates under the umbrella of the International Energy Agency.

  • CADDET
Information on full-scale commercial geothermal energy projects

  • Geothermal Energy Association
A trade association composed of U.S. companies who support the expanded use of geothermal energy and are developing geothermal resources worldwide for electrical power generation and direct-heat uses
