According to the Home Builders Federation's Housing Pipeline report planning permissions in England rose 36% in Q3 2012 against the previous quarter.

Q3 2011 saw 29,059 approvals where as 33,881 home approvals were announced this year a 17% rise on permissions being granted. However the numbers fall short of the the 60,000 per quarter needed to meet demand, HBF warned.

HBF also said that it hoped that the improvement would continue with the influence of the National Planning Policy Framework. Local authorities must also assess housing need for now and the future and allocate sufficient land.

HBF’s executive chairman Stewart Baseley said: “The increase is good news and hopefully a reflection of the positive planning principles of the new system. It is just one quarterly increase and we are still well short of the number needed but we hope it starts a trend that will continue in 2013.”

Our MD Prof Benfield had this to say on the news: "This rise still leaves a massive shortfall which continues to be cumulative, this suggests that demand will continue to push house prices up."
