Nick Boles the planning minister had announced today that the housing crisis could be solved if the amount of land built on is increased to around 12%. An issue that Professor Benfield, our MD here at the Benfield ATT Group has touched on in the past. We feel so strongly about it that we created a new land finding service to do just that.
Speaking on BBC Newsnight, Boles said that around 9% of land had been developed “in the UK and England." Boles also noted that developing another 2-3% of land would rectify the housing shortage. Boles then continued to say that that open land would be earmarked for development, with greenbelt land still being protected under the government’s new planning rules.
“The built environment can be more beautiful than nature and we shouldn't obsess about the fact that the only landscapes that are beautiful are open – sometimes buildings are better.”
“We’re going to protect the greenbelt but if people want to have housing for their kids, they have to accept we need to build more on some open land.”
