According to the latest registration figures released by the NHBC the number of new homes registered has fallen 12% over the year to date.

Over the year up to and including October 2012, a total of 89,600 new homes in the UK were registered. This is a considerable drop compared to the 101,600 new homes over the same period in 2011. For the August to October quarter, the total number of registrations also fell against the same quarter last year. It was down 26,440 against 2011’s 26,509.

Private sector registrations were also slightly down over the quarter. They were down 19,670 against 19,692.

Between August 2011 and October 2011 public registrations also dipped by a marginal amount. Down to 6,770 compared to the 6,817 registered.

NHBC’s commercial director Richard Tamayo commented: “Our figures show there remains a clear deficit in the number of new homes being built in the UK compared to last year.

"However, we are greatly encouraged by the government’s recent commitment to back the industry and provide new funding, particularly to unlock almost 50,000 homes on stalled sites. It is an ambitious, but very necessary proposal and we look forward to seeing how it develops in the New Year.”
