Do You Believe in Sustainabilty?

This week, we have been looking at the NBS 2014 report on sustainability and the survey they undertook.

It drew responses from architects, contractors, structural engineers and many more professions within the construction sector.

NBS 2014 Report

Making Real Changes

The report highlighted a strong commitment to sustainability from many of those in the industry.

Well over half of those surveyed claimed sustainability was part of their ‘personal beliefs and values’, and many felt that the industry as a whole is poised to make ‘real changes to the sustainability of our way of living’.

‘What this survey has made clear is that there is a deep level of personal and professional commitment in the construction industry to creating sustainable buildings.’

The Cherokee Lofts in Hollywood (above) is a good example of how sustainable elements can blend into a fresh, modern design.

Not Doing Enough?

However, the report states that a large percentage of respondents believe more could be done, for example:

  • Introducing tighter legislation
  • Removal of VAT on renovation and repair
  • Making it a legal requirement for a new builds to be zero-carbon

Many also now feel that awards should not be given our purely on the aesthetic appearance of a building – but should also consider sustainability and the lifelong performance of the building.

Next week we’ll take another look at the report with a particular focus on how climate change is affecting building design.
